no place like home

While I’m home for Spring Break, I’ve been able to practice my new ASL skills with my family. My brother’s signing is coming along well, and it’s been fun to practice simple phrases and sentences with him.

Having another person who understands ASL to work with on a daily basis has been a real pleasure for me. I’m used to practicing on my own with just a video to work with. But a video can’t tell me if my signs are clear or not. I can practice in front of a mirror, but there really isn’t anything that can replace the one-on-one interaction.

I’m going to miss having my practice partner when I return to school, but I’m planning on attending an ASL club that is going to start meeting on Monday nights after break. That will give me a chance to meet more people who enjoy using ASL, and maybe find a regular practice partner as well.
